We are pleased to share the Renzo Piano Building Workshop together with G124 (the Senator’s working group focusing on the suburbs) will take part in the 15th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia opened to the public from May 28th to November 27th.
The Renzo Piano Building Workshop and G124 will present projects documenting the work on the outskirts made over the last 30 years but also more recent projects such as the paediatric hospital for Emergency in Uganda.
The G124, in particular, will present studies on some Italian suburbs, from 2014 till today, by focusing on small mending operations.

“Being a General Practitioner Architect, by analogy with a General Practitioner, teaches you something very important: the art of listening to people and finding inspiration.

For more than thirty years, I have been engaged in participatory processes, self-build and the suburbs. I was born on the outskirts of a city, near the steel mills and shipyards of western Genoa. Most of the inhabitants of cities live on the outskirts and these are the places of the future, rich in energy and as vital as ever.
I started to get interested in these issues with Unesco in the early 80s, when we invented the Otranto Urban Regeneration Workshop, then undertook an experiment in Perugia with the Evolutive Housing self-build system. Moreover, for thirty years I have been organizing projects in the suburbs with my Building Workshop.
The outskirts are not those of our cities. In addition, to build a paediatric hospital for Emergency on the shores of the Lake Victoria in Uganda is to deal with something that is away from what the centre of the world is considered. As to plan a civic centre in an electric plant abandoned in the heart of Moscow. To mend the outskirts means so many things.
Now for the last three years I have been busy with my role as Life Senator in the Italian Senate, working with young architects on case studies in the Italian suburbs. I decided to devote my energy to this project, which is called G124, being named after the number of my office at Palazzo Giustiniani, which has been turned into a workshop to design the redevelopment of the suburbs”.

Renzo Piano Building Workshop is among the seven international architecture practices who have been invited to pitch for the official presidential library in Chicago.
"The Obama Presidential Center will be so much more than a library – this facility will seek to inspire citizens across the globe to better their communities, their countries, and their world." said Martin Nesbitt, chairman of the Obama Foundation.
The building will include a library for the presidential archives, a museum focused on Obama’s presidency, and space for programmes and initiatives which ‘advance the foundation’s public mission’. The winner is expected to be revealed in early 2016.

15 days lefts before the official opening of the new Whitney Museum scheduled on May 1st. Situated between the High Line and the Hudson River in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, the new building will substantially enlarge the Whitney’s exhibition and programming space, enabling the first comprehensive view of the Museum’s growing collection, which today comprises more than 19,000 works of modern and contemporary American art.
According to Pritzker Prize-wining architect Renzo Piano, “The design for the new museum emerges equally from a close study of the Whitney’s needs and from a response to this remarkable site. We wanted to draw on its vitality and at the same time enhance its rich character."
Some 50,000 sq. ft of gallery space is distributed over levels five, six, seven and eight, the fifth level boasting a 18,000 sq. ft, column-free gallery – making it the largest open-plan museum gallery in New York City. This gallery is reserved for temporary exhibitions and its expansive volume will enable the display of really large works of contemporary art. The permanent collection is exhibited on two floors, level six and seven. These two floors also step back towards the west to create 13,000 sq ft of outdoor sculpture terraces. Museum offices, education centre, conservation laboratories and library reading room are situated north of the building’s core on levels three to seven, including a multi-use theatre for film, video and performance on level five.
“We are creating an environment in which visitors will be encouraged to connect deeply with art through an irreplaceable first-hand experience” said Adam D. Weinberg, The Whitney’s Alice Pratt Brown Director.

Renzo Piano and top management for Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 10 to inaugurate the company's new operational headquarters in Turin, a 166-metre skyscraper designed by RPBW which is both an environmental and social laboratory and an urban project designed by RPBW. The building which took five years to build, is set at the center of an exceptional concentration of public services and facilities on the metropolitan scale in a zone of strategic importance for the city.
The tower, 166 meters high. is divided by infrastructure into 3 levels of parking garages, one of utility rooms and a low garden around which are laid out the company restaurant and kindergarten, while above ground it consists of 26 floors of offices and a floor for training which includes spaces and services open to the public.
“The building must become part of the daily life of the city,” he said. “The citizens must accept it and use it in their day-to-day lives. For this reason, the last three floors are open to all” Architect Renzo Piano said.

We are delighted to announce that our future vision for the Fielden House project, located just west of The Shard, was unanimously approved by Southwark at planning committee in London last night.

In 2013, RPBW was appointed by Sellar Property Group to design a slender residential tower with generous public realm amenities at street level, to complement the now occupied, Shard and Place buildings.

The proposed new public spaces and landscaping to be delivered by this mixed use development, were strongly supported and praised by the councillors in the meeting.

The public realm improvements will have a significant contribution to the area and when completed in 2018, together with the new London Bridge station, will complete the regeneration of London Bridge.

Last night's unanimous approval marks the beginning of the next chapter of the London Bridge Quarter.

We are deeply saddened to learn the death of landscape designer Michel Corajoud.

We enjoyed a strong and long-lasting relationship: our collaboration was always successful.

Michel Corajoud has been one of the leading figures of formulating a new approach the suburban landscape in France.

Winner of the 1992 Grand Prix du Paysage and the 2003 Grand Prix de l'urbanisme, he was not only a landscape designer but also a great teacher and an excellent writer.

His texts were constantly reflecting on the conditions of landscapes and their transformation.

His thoughts were always about the continuous movement between landscape and architectural design.

His energy and imagination were an inspiration for all of us at RPBW.

"I have lost a very good friend: it was great to have the chance to work with Michel. I will greatly miss him" Renzo Piano said.

Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends and colleagues.

After 6 years of construction, the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas will officially inaugurate its new building to the public on November 27. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, it doubles the gallery space for the museum's permanent collection.
The Kimbell Art Museum’s original building was designed by Louis Kahn in 1972. The programmes and collection of Fort Worth’s Kimbell Art Museum have grown dramatically in recent years, far beyond anything envisioned by the museum in the 1970s. Addressing the severe lack of space for the museum’s exhibition and education programmes, the new building provides gallery space for temporary exhibitions, classrooms and studios for the museum’s education department, a large auditorium of 299 seats, an expanded library and underground parking. The expansion roughly doubles the Museum’s gallery space.

Subtly echoing Kahn’s building in height, scale and general layout, the RPBW building has a more open, transparent character. Views through the new building to the landscape and Kahn building beyond emphasise the key motifs of transparency and openness. The new facility will be highly energy efficient, requiring only one fourth of the energy consumed by the Kahn building.
