Fondazione Vedova

Venice, Italy

Located in one of the nine warehouses that compose the Magazzini del Sale in Venice, the Vedova Foundation is entirely dedicated to the works of Italian artist Emilio Vedova and seeks to express the close relationship that the artist had with this site. The warehouse is an irregular and asymmetric volume, which is over 70m long, 9m wide and 8m high. It features a wooden vaulted roof structure and rough brick walls that have been left unchanged in order to maintain the austere character of building. The project comprises two main elements, the entrance area and the exhibition space.

Vedova’s works are stored in a specially designed metal structure to the rear of the exhibition space, from where they are picked up and carried by a sophisticated conveying system equipped with mobile robotic arms. The works are slowly transported through the entire length of the Magazzino and positioned at various heights in the exhibition space. Vedova’s work is thereby gradually unveiled to visitors who can freely move around the canvases. Flexible and dynamic, the space is conceived to adapt to different kinds of art exhibition.
